LATE FLURRY LIFTS MINES SOCCER TO 4-1 VICTORY OVER FORT LEWIS AND FIRST RMAC TOURNAMENT TITLE SINCE 1996

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines soccer team scored three goals in the final 13 minutes to defeat Fort Lewis, 4-1, in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Finals on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field.

The victory improved CSM to 16-4-1 overall and set a single season school record for victories. Fort Lewis, which had captured the last five RMAC Tournament Titles, concludes its season at 9-7-5.

Mines opened the scoring at the 35:00 mark as sophomore defender Brian Blaskovich (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) headed in a corner kick by junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch).

The Skyhawks, who played the final 49 minutes of the match two-men down, tied the match at 1-1 when freshman forward Cole Sweetser (North Richland Hills, Texas) netted his seventh goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Josh Veryser (Aurora, Colo.).

However, the Orediggers regained the lead with less than 13 minutes remaining as senior midfielder Travis Fletcher (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) scored off assists from junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union) and sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine). Flanagan, the RMAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, added a tally off a 25-yard shot at the 84:24 mark, while freshman forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) put the game out of reach with a goal one minute later. Junior goalkeeper O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) registered the assist on Dixon’s goal.

Bullard finished with seven saves, while FLC redshirt freshman Nick Clark (Durango, Colo.) posted eight.

CSM must now wait to see if it will receive a berth one of two berths to the NCAA Division II Tournament out of the Midwest Region. The Orediggers entered the week ranked third in the region behind Incarnate Word and Midwestern State.

MINES SOCCER ADVANCES TO RMAC FINALS WITH
8-1 VICTORY OVER SOUTHERN COLORADO

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines soccer team set a single-season school record with its 15th victory of the season by defeating Southern Colorado, 8-1, in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals at Brooks Field.

CSM jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead in today’s match as senior midfielder Jimmy Trask (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) tallied two goals and an assist in the half. Junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union) added a goal and an assist, while senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston) added a pair of first half assists.

Sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) chipped in with one goal in each half, while junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) registered a goal and an assist in the second half.

Junior forward Ben Adetoye (Englewood, Colo./Sheridan) scored in the second half for USC off an assist from senior forward Craig Miller (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View).

CSM junior O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) picked up the win by making five saves.

Mines, now 15-4-1, advances to play second-seeded Fort Lewis on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm in the RMAC Championship at Brooks Field. The Skyhawks advanced with a 2-1 overtime victory over Regis in the other semifinal.

The Orediggers, who have defeated FLC two times this season. will be playing in their first RMAC Final since 2000 when they lost to Fort Lewis, 1-0 in Golden.

MINES SOCCER BLANKS METRO STATE, 4-0

DENVER, Colo. -- The 19th-ranked Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team improved its unbeaten streak to seven by handing Metro State a 4-0 setback on Sunday afternoon. Mines, 6-0-1 over its last seven matches, also tied a school record with its 14th victory of the season and is now 14-4-1 in 2002.

The Orediggers claimed a 1-0 lead at the half on a tally by senior midfielder Jimmy Trask (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) off an assist from sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) in the 20th minute.

Senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston) extended the lead to 2-0 on a tally off an assist from freshman forward Brian Law (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) at the 76:10 mark. Mines added two goals in the final 10 minutes of the match to secure the win.

Trask scored his second goal of the game at the 81:53 mark off an assist from senior midfielder Travis Fletcher (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown), while freshman forward Rafael Ribaro (Colorado Springs, Colo./William J. Palmer) registered the final goal of the game with just under two minutes to play on a penalty kick.

Junior goalkeeper O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) posted three saves to earn his third straight shutout and improve to 11-2-1 this season.

Mines will be back in action this weekend as it hosts the RMAC Tournament. The semifinal opponent and game time for CSM will be announced.

COLORADO MINES SOCCER CLINCHES REGULAR SEASON RMAC TITLE WITH 2-0 VICTORY OVER REGIS

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines soccer team clinched the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 2-0 victory over Regis in RMAC action on Friday afternoon at Brooks Field. By earning the regular season crown, CSM will host next weekend’s RMAC Tournament.

In today’s match, Mines (13-4-1, 8-2-1 RMAC) opened the scoring at the 64:20 mark as sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) tallied his team-leading 11th goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston). The Orediggers iced the game with less than two minutes remaining as freshman forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) notched a goal off an assist from Phipps.

CSM junior goalkeeper O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) registered seven saves to earn his third shutout of the season and improved to 10-2-1 this season. Regis (8-7-2, 5-4-2) goalkeeper Mike Montgomery (Broken Arrow, Okla./Northern Oklahoma) posted 13 saves in the net.

For the game, Mines outshot Regis, 31-10, and also attempted 11 corner kicks to Regis’ three.

MINES SOCCER MOVES INTO FIRST PLACE
WITH 3-0 WIN AT SOUTHERN COLORADO

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team took over sole possession of first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 3-0 victory at Southern Colorado on Sunday afternoon.

Mines, 12-4-1 overall, leads the conference with a 7-2-1 record and 22 points. They are followed closely by Southern Colorado (19), Regis (17), UCCS (15), Fort Lewis (14) and Colorado Christian (13). The top four teams will qualify for the RMAC Tournament the week of Nov. 9 with the regular season champion serving as the host school.

CSM claimed a 1-0 lead at the half today as junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) netted a goal at the 30:35 mark off an assist from junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union). The Oredigger’s added second half goals from senior defender Justin Cross (Tucson, Ariz./CDO) and freshman forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) to preserve the win. After a scoreless first half, CSM grabbed a 1-0 lead as sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) tallied his team-leading 10th goal of the season. The goal, which came at the 58:47 mark, was assisted by junior midfielder Robbie Williams (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch).

The Mountain Lions (6-9, 4-6 RMAC) tied the game at 1-1 less than five minutes later as Jesse Day netted a 20-yard shot off an assist by William Davis. However, the Orediggers quickly responded as senior midfielder Jimmy Trask (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) netted the game winner at the 65:09 mark.

The victory improves Mines to 10-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the RMAC, while Fort Lewis slips to 5-6-4 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference.

The Skyhawks gained a 1-0 lead at the 39:13 mark as Kyle Fredrick notched his sixth goal of the season off assists from Bernardo Costa and Jason Campbell.

FLC held a one-goal lead until the 67:50 mark of the second half when CSM junior midfielder Robbie Williams (Highlands Ranch, Colo./TCU) scored his first goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Travis Fletcher (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown).

Mines (9-4-1, 4-2-1) opened the scoring at the 30:37 mark on a penalty kick by junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union) after sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) was tripped in the box. CSM extended its advantage to 2-0 on a tally by senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston) off an assist from a free kick by junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) at the 38:18 mark.

The Cougars (4-5-2, 4-2-1) managed to cut their deficit to 2-1 with 15 seconds remaining in the first half as Brad Palik notched a goal. CCU then tied the game at 2-2 with three minutes left in regulation on a penalty kick from Gary Evans, Jr.

CSM freshman forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces) opened the scoring 16:19 into the first half with a tally off an assist from senior midfielder Travis Fletcher (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown).

CSM gained a 2-0 lead at the 69:46 mark on a goal by sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) off assists from senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston)) and senior defender Justin Cross (Tucson, Ariz./CDO). St. Ed’s managed to cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal by Dustin Michalak with just under seven minutes left in the match.

For the match, St. Ed’s outshot Mines, 19-12, while the Orediggers attempted five corner kicks to St. Ed’s four.

CSM SOCCER FALLS TO INCARNATE WORD, 1-0, IN OVERTIME

SAN ANTONIO, Texas. -- The 23rd-ranked Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team was defeated by sixth-ranked Incarnate Word, 1-0 in overtime, on Friday evening in a key Midwest Regional game.

Mines entered the contest ranked third in the region, while IWA was the top-ranked team in the Midwest. CSM fell to 8-4 with the loss, while Incarnate Word improved to 9-0-3.

The game’s lone goal came 6:17 into overtime when Nick Pertuit scored off an assist from Lubomir Bogdanov.

Colorado Mines will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they take on St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas.

The Orediggers, who had not played a match since September 29 at Midwestern State, struck for the game’s lone goal at the 20:30 mark of the first half when sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) tallied an unassisted goal. For Phipps, it was his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Junior O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) recorded six saves in the net to earn CSM’s first shutout of the season. Mines outshot Denver, 15-11, but DU (6-7) held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Colorado Mines (8-3) will be back in action on Friday evening when it travels to San Antonio, Texas for a match against sixth-ranked Incarnate Word at 7:00 pm.

Midwestern State got a goal from Andy Valenson seven minutes into the match to claim a 1-0 lead and extended its lead to 2-0 on a tally from Joe Burke at the 56:53 mark.

Midwestern outshot Mines, 18-13 and both teams attempted six corner kicks.

West Texas (4-3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Collin Mabry and Tylar Short.

After a scoreless 35 minutes to open the second half, the Orediggers went to work. Senior midfielder Jimmy Trask (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Acadmey) began the scoring with a tally at the 81:21 mark off a corner kick from junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) to cut CSM's deficit to 2-1.

CSM SOCCER FALLS TO SOUTHERN COLORADO, 3-1

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The Colorado School of Mines soccer team lost for the second time in three matches as Southern Colorado defeated the Orediggers, 3-1, in RMAC men’s soccer action Sunday evening at Brooks Field.

The Thunderwolves (4-1-1, 4-1-1) opened the scoring at the 21:09 mark as Ben Adetoye scored after he deflected in an attempted clear by a CSM defender. The Orediggers (6-2, 4-2) tied the game at 1-1 at the 63:03 mark as sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) netted his fifth goal of the season off a rebound from a shot by junior midfielder Robbie Williams (Highlands Ranch, Colo./TCU).

However, USC iced the game with two scores in a span of 10 minutes to close the game. Craig Miller pushed the Thunderwolves lead to 2-1 with a goal at the 74:59 mark, while Adetoye added an insurance goal on a breakaway off an assist from Scott Lewis with just less than six minutes remaining.

CSM outshot Southern Colorado, 27-11, and also attempted 23 corner kicks to USC’s three.

The Orediggers will return to action on Friday afternoon when they face West Texas A&M at Midwestern State at 4:00 pm.

MINES SOCCER DEFEATS UCCS, 3-1


Head Men's Soccer Coach Frank Kohlenstein earned his 300th career victory on Friday afternoon.

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Colorado School of Mines Head Soccer coach Frank Kohlenstein earned his 300th career victory as the Orediggers defeated UC-Colorado Springs, 3-1, in RMAC men’s soccer action at Brooks Field on Friday afternoon. Kohlenstein, who is in his 21st season of coaching, now claims a career record of 300-120-31.

The Orediggers (6-1, 4-1 RMAC) opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest as senior defender Justin Cross (Tucson, Ariz./CDO) notched his second goal of the season off a corner kick from junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch). The Mountain Lions (2-6, 1-4) responded at the 29:55 mark on a goal by Jared Blackney off an assist from Martin Kristiseter. However, the Orediggers regained a one-goal lead at 2-1 on a goal by senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston) off an assist from senior midfielder Travis Fletcher (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) with just more than one minute to play in the first half.

CSM the iced the game on a penalty kick from sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) at the 78:41 mark.

The Orediggers will be back in action on Sunday evening when they host Southern Colorado at 7:00 pm at Brooks Field.

CSM SOCCER FALLS AT COLORADO CHRISTIAN, 1-0

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- The fourth-ranked Colorado School of Mines soccer team dropped its first match of the season as Colorado Christian handed the Orediggers a 1-0 setback on Wednesday afternoon.

Playing a majority of the game in a downpour, neither team was able to muster a first half goal. The Cougars (3-4, 3-1) scored the game’s lone goal with just under 10 minutes to play as sophomore midfielder Zac Corley fired a shot from 18-yards out that found the back of the net.

With the loss, CSM now stands at 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines will return to action on Friday afternoon when it hosts UC-Colorado Springs at 4:00 pm at Brooks Field.

MINES SOCCER DEFEATS FORT LEWIS, 4-3, IN TWO OVERTIMES

DURANGO, Colo. -- The fourth-ranked Colorado School of Mines soccer team overcame a 3-0 second half deficit to post a 4-3 victory in double overtime at Fort Lewis on Sunday afternoon. It marked the first time CSM fifth-year Head Coach Frank Kohlenstein has defeated the Skyhawks and the first time since the 1996 season that the Orediggers defeated Fort Lewis.

FLC (1-4-1, 1-3-0 RMAC) claimed a 1-0 lead at halftime as Kyle Fredrick scored six minutes into the contest for the lone goal of the first half. The Skyhawks extended their lead to 3-0 with 34:00 to play on early second half goals from Fredrick and Pat DeBoalt.

However, the Orediggers (5-0, 3-0 RMAC) responded with a pair of goals in a span of two minutes to cut their deficit to 3-2 with 22:00 to play. Freshman forward Rafael Ribaro (Brazil/William J. Palmer) tallied his third goal of the season with 24:00 to play in the game and senior defender Justin Cross (Tucson, Ariz./CDO) added his first goal of the season off an assist from junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union) at the 22:00 mark. Ribaro then sent the game into overtime with his second goal of the game with just 1:08 to play.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Flanagan sealed the victory for the Orediggers as he scored off a direct kick with 6:30 left in the second overtime session.

CSM junior O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) allowed three goals and made six saves in 60:00 of action, while sophomore David Bergman (Pueblo West, Colo./Pueblo West) played the final 43:00 and posted six saves. FLC goalkeeper Nick Clark allowed four goals and made 15 saves in playing all 103 minutes.

With the victory Kohlenstein is now just one win shy of 300 for his career, as he claims a record of 299-119-31 in this his 21st year of coaching.

CSM will return to action on Wednesday afternoon with a 4:00 pm match at Colorado Christian.

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The sixth-ranked Colorado School of Mines soccer team improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the RMAC with a 4-2 victory over Metro State on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field.

The Roadrunners scored the game’s first goal less than two minutes into the match as sophomore midfielder Blake Carson (Germantown, Tenn./Houston) netted a penalty kick. However, the Orediggers responded at the 27:38 mark as senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston) scored to tie the game at 1-1.

Metro would regain the lead at 2-1 less than two minutes into the second half as junior forward Alex Grecu (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa Community) headed in a goal off a free-kick from junior defender Corey Gonzalez (Wichita, Kan./Cloud Community). CSM would respond to knot the game at 2-2 at the 63:24 mark as Talburt scored his second goal of the game off an assist from junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union).

The Orediggers took the lead for good just 24 seconds later as junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Highlands Ranch) scored off a cross from sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine). Senior midfielder Jimmy Trask (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) concluded the scoring at the 82:48 mark off an assist from freshman forward Rafael Ribaro (Brazil/William J. Palmer).

CSM junior goalkeeper O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) recorded six saves, while Roadrunner (1-2-1, 0-2) senior Eric Butler (Placentia, Calif./Mater Dei) made five saves.

DENVER, Colo. -- The sixth-ranked Colorado School of Mines soccer team scored four unanswered second half goals to turn a 1-0 halftime deficit into a 4-1 victory over Regis in the RMAC opener for both teams on Friday afternoon.

The Rangers (0-3, 0-1) jumped on the board first when Eric Tormoehlen scored off an assist from Lance Snodgrass 17 minutes into the match.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Orediggers (3-0, 1-0) then scored four unanswered goals in the final 45 minutes to claim the victory. Junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union) started the scoring with a penalty kick at the 55:02 mark. Senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston) netted his second goal of the season 14 minutes later to give CSM a 2-1 lead.

Freshman forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) netted CSM’s second penalty kick of the half with five minutes left in the match and senior midfielder Jimmy Trask (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) concluded the scoring at the 88:00 mark off an assist from senior midfielder Travis Fletcher (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown).

CSM SOCCER DEFEATS NORTHEASTERN STATE, 6-2

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Colorado School of Mines sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) and freshman forward Rafael Ribaro (Brazil, William J. Palmer) each tallied two goals to lead the Orediggers to a 6-2 victory over Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field.

Mines took a 1-0 lead just 33 seconds into the match when junior defender Joel Flanagan’s (Tulsa, Okla./Union) free kick from beyond midfield sailed over the head of the Redmen goalkeeper. CSM extended its lead to 2-0 on Phipps’ first goal 17:40 into the game off an assist from senior midfielder Travis Fletcher (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown).

The Redmen cut their deficit in half at the 26:18 mark when Austin Greenhaw headed in a cross from Michael Steward. However, the Orediggers responded with Ribaro’s first career goal less than two minutes later. But once again, the Redmen responded as Jason Matthews scored with 11 minutes to play in the first half.

CSM (2-0) would tack on three second half goals, one apiece from Phipps, Ribaro and senior midfielder Eric Talburt (Windsor, Colo./Charleston) to provide the final 6-2 margin.

Mines junior goalkeeper O.J. Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) posted three saves to earn his second win of the season, while Northeastern State’s Michael Sylvester made 10 saves. The Orediggers outshot the Redmen, 37-8.

School of Mines will return to action on Friday afternoon when it travels to Regis for its first RMAC-contest of the season at 4:00 pm.

MINES SOCCER TOPS TAMPA IN OPENER, 5-2

GOLDEN, Colo. -- The 22nd-ranked Colorado School of Mines soccer team opened the 2002 season with a 5-2 victory over ninth-ranked and defending Division II National Champions, the University of Tampa, at Brooks Field on Friday evening.

The Orediggers took a 1-0 lead 14:14 into the match as junior defender Joel Flanagan (Tulsa, Okla./Union) scored off a 30-yard free kick. CSM gained a 2-0 lead 21:10 into the game when sophomore forward David Grabski (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyene) tallied a goal.

CSM extended its lead to 3-0 when freshman forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces) tallied his first career collegiate goal nine minutes into the second half. The Spartans responded with a pair of goals over the next eight minutes from Kareem Escayg and Roy Fink to cut their deficit to 3-2 with 26 minutes to play.

However, the Orediggers posted two more goals, one apiece from junior midfielder Jared Peacock (Highlands Ranch, Colo./TCU) and sophomore forward Scott Phipps (Lakewood, Colo./Columbine) to claim the 5-2 victory.

CSM junior goalkeeper OJ Bullard (Houston, Texas/Klein Forest) made one save, while Steve Smith posted six saves for Tampa. The Orediggers outshot the Spartans, 25-12.
