CSM MEN'S SOCCER ENDS SEASON
WITH 1-0 SETBACK TO FORT LEWIS
DURANGO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team watched their season come to an end Sunday afternoon as they fell to #1 nationally ranked Fort Lewis, 1-0. After losing to Fort Lewis a week earlier in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship game 3-0, Mines had a chance to play the Skyhawks one last time in the Midwest Regional finals in hopes of advancing to the national quarterfinals. The lone goal of the match came just 20 minutes into the first half as John Cunliffe scored off of a free kick 20 yards out. The rest of the game remained tight as Mines fired away and out shot the Skyhawks in the second half, 14-7. The Orediggers however could not find the back of the net as they saw their season slip away in the final minutes of the game. Fort Lewis now moves on to the national quarterfinals where they will face either Seattle Pacific or California State-Dominguez Hills. Mines ended their season with a 13-7-4 overall record
and made record books by making it to the national tournament for its
first time in program history. -OREDIGGERS- CSM MEN'S SOCCER TIES INCARNATE WORD, 1-1, DURANGO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team advanced to the Midwest Regional Soccer Tournament Championship by defeating Incarnate Word on penalty kicks (4-2) on Friday afternoon at Dirks Field on the campus of Fort Lewis. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes in regular time and two 10 minute sudden death overtime sessions. Mines got out to a quick start scoring just five minutes into the game off of a Masaki Hemmi corner kick. Hemmi's corner kick was finished off by Craig Thompson, giving the Orediggers a 1-0 lead. Incarnate Word answered back 15 minutes into the second half off of a goal by Ljubomir Kocic. Play continued tight as neither team could seem to score again. The two teams then went on to a shootout, the Orediggers second in post season play. After advancing to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Finals off of a 3-2 shootout win against Metro State last week, Mines once again came up victorious beating Incarnate Word 4-2 in the shootout, advancing them to the Regional finals. CSM will play top-seeded Fort Lewis, the No. 1 ranked team in the country on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 pm in the Regional Championship game. LEWIS 3-0 DURANGO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team came up short to #1 nationally ranked Fort Lewis, Sunday afternoon in the championship match for the Rocky MountainAthletic Conference. After going into halftime 0-0, the Orediggers were unable to find the back of the net as the Skyhawks were able to score three in the second half. Midfielder Ryan Kerr got Fort Lewis on the scoreboard 11 minutes into the second half, while John Cunliffe and Cole Sweetser put the game out of reach, scoring the last two goals at the 70 and 88 minute mark. Four of mines players made the RMAC all-Tournament team. Sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Galloway, junior defender Daniel Lockley and senior forwards Mike Dixon and Rafael Riberio were the four to earn these accolades. CSM will have to wait to see if they have earned a spot in the Midwest Regional Tournament which will be held this weekend in Durango, Colo. -OREDIGGERS- CSM MEN'S SOCCER TIES METRO STATE, 2-2, DURANGO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team advanced to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Championship by defeating Metro State on penalty kicks (3-2) on Friday afternoon at Dirks Field on the campus of Fort Lewis. The two teams played to a 2-2 after 90 minutes in regular time and two 10 minute sudden death overtime sessions. Metro State took a 2-0 lead with just under five minutes to play in the first half on a tally by Shawn Elbaum. Ricky Fetherstron gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead just 4:34 into the match. However, CSM cut the deficit to 2-1 just before the half as senior forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) scored off a crossing pass. Dixon would knot the match at 2-2 at the 50:59 mark with his second goal of the match and 16th of the season which tied him for the most in a single season at CSM with Dan Huber (1994 and 1995). In the shootout, both teams scored on their first two shots. Metro State's third kick was high and left and CSM's third shot was saved. After a save by CSM junior Kevin Galloway (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) on the fourth Roadrunner shot, CSM junior Daniel Lockley (Spring, Texas/Klein) gave the Orediggers a 3-2 advantage with one shooter left for each team. But CSM did not need its last participant as Galloway saved a shot by Antonio Porras to advance CSM to the finals on Sunday at 1:00 pm. CSM will play top-seeded Fort Lewis, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, after the Skyhawks defeated CSU-Pueblo, 6-0, in Friday's other semifinal. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S SOCCER WINS AT UCCS, 4-1 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team concluded the regular season with a 4-1 win at UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. CSM fell behind 1-0 at the 18:32 mark as James McMonigle tallied a goal for the Mountain Lions. However, CSM senior midfielder Jeff Perkins (Houston, Texas/Army) tied the score at 1-1 as he knocked in a rebound off a penalty kick at the 31:52 mark. The Orediggers added three second half tallies within the span of seven minutes to earn the win. Senior forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) scored at the 71:20 mark, UCCS added an own goal less than three minutes later and junior defender Brian Law (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored his first goal of the season at the 78:24 mark to finish the scoring. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Galloway (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) made seven saves to earn the win, while Chris Hovasse posted seven for UCCS. CSM (13-4-2, 6-3-2) will now enter the RMAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play second seeded Metro State at 12:00 pm Friday at Fort Lewis. The winner will play Sunday at 1:00 pm in the RMAC Championship against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between top-seeded Fort Lewis and fourth-seeded CSU-Pueblo. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S SOCCER FALLS AT CSU-PUEBLO, 3-0 PUEBLO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team fell to 12-5-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the conference with a 3-0 setback at Colorado State-Pueblo in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action Friday afternoon. CSU-P took a 2-0 lead at the half as Yusuke Ota tallied a goal at the 19:59 mark and Ryan Creager added a penalty kick with just under three minutes to play in the first half. Mark Thimm added a goal with eight seconds to play for the final margin. CSM outshot CSU-Pueblo, 17-11, but Thunderwolf goalkeeper David Winchell posted nine saves. The Orediggers will conclude the regular season on Sunday with a 2:00 pm match at CU-Colorado Springs. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S SOCCER FALL TO THIRD RANKED FORT LEWIS 3-0 FORT LEWIS, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team fell to third ranked Fort Lewis Sunday afternoon with a score 3-0. Fort Lewis jumped out to an early lead just fifteen minutes into the first half after Cole Sweetser finished off a cross from Ryan Kerr. Fort Lewis went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. They went on to score 2 more later into the second half. Mines finished the game with nine shots while Fort Lewis had 12. The Orediggers record is now 12-4-2 and 5-3-2 in the RMAC. Mines returns to action this week when they travel to Pueblo on Friday afternoon to face CSU- Pueblo, game time is at 3:30 pm. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S SOCCER TEAM DEFEATS COLORADO CHRISTIAN 2-0 LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team improved their record to 12-3-2 on the season after a 2-0 win over Colorado Christian Wednesday afternoon. Mines' first goal was scored by Freshman Jason Decker (Butte, Mont./Butte) just 22 minutes into the first half. The Orediggers continued the pressure outshooting the Cougars 8-1 in the first half, but couldnt seem to get another one, going into half 1-0. In the second half, with just seven minutes left to play, Sophomore Ross Davis (Muskegon, Mich, Muskegon) scored Mines' second goal off of a pass from senior Rafael Ribeiro (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer). Goalkeeper Kevin Galloway also came away with his seventh shutout on the season. Mines returns to action Sunday afternoon in Durango, Colo. where they will face third ranked Fort Lewis College. Mines and Fort Lewis tied 0-0 the last time they played on September 23. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S SOCCER TEAM TIE 1-1 WITH REGIS IN DOUBLE OT GOLDEN, Colo. - For the second game in a row, The Colorado School of Mines men's socccer team went into double overtime, however this time neither team was able to score in the extra periods. The Orediggers ended with a 1-1 decision against Regis University Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first half, both teams were able to get on the board during the second. Regis player, Travis Mitchell put the Rangers up 1-0, 20 minutes into the second half. Mines's Rafael Ribeiro (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) answered back just two minutes later tieing it up 1-1. Ribeiro's goal was his third in just two games. After two overtimes, the decision ended in a tie. The tie puts Mines record at 11-3-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the Conference. Mines returns to action Wednesday when they will be on the road to face Colorado Christian, game time is at 3:30 pm.
-- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S SOCCER TEAM DEFEATS METRO 3-2 IN DOUBLE OT GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team defeated 18th nationally ranked Metro State 3-2 tonight after double overtime. Senior forward Rafael Ribeiro (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) came up big with two goals, his second being most important as it lead his team to victory over the Roadrunners. After a 2-2 game at the end of regulation, the two teams battled back and forth during the two overtime periods. With just four minutes remaining in the second overtime, Ribeiro was able to put a shot to the right corner past Metro's keeper David McReavy. Mike Dixon also scored during the game giving him his 13th goal of the season, along with an assist on Ribeiro's first goal. Mines will return to action Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at Brooks Field when they face Regis University. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S BEATS 11TH RANKED MIDWESTERN DURANGO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team beat the 11th ranked team in the nation this afternoon in Durango, Colo. The Orediggers won with a 2-0 decision over Midwestern state. Senior Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Cali./Garces Memorial) and senior Rafael Ribeiro (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) tallied CSM's goals. The Orediggers wrapped up their four team tournament in Fort Lewis this weekend 1-1. The win over Midwestern improves Mines record to 10-3-1 on the season. Men's soccer will return to action this weekend as they host Metro State on Friday night at 7:00 pm and Regis on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Both games are at Brooks Field. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM MEN'S FALLS TO WEST TEXAS A&M, 2-1 DURANGO, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team fell to 9-3-1 overall with a 2-1 setback to West Texas A&M in nonconference action at Fort Lewis' Dirks Field Friday afternoon. CSM came into the match ranked fourth in the Midwest Region, while the Buffaloes were ranked fifth. WTAMU (8-3) took a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the match on a goal from Josh Fender off an assist from Nick Stevenson. The duo hooked up again at the 52:04 mark for Fender's 13th goal of the season to give the Buffs a 2-0 lead. CSM sliced the deficit in half at the 75:06 mark when senior midfielder Jeff Perkins (Houston, Texas/Army) tallied his second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore defender Nick Kubala (Houston, Texas/Talyor), but the Orediggers could not score the equalizer. Senior forward Mike Dixon (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) had another great performance, scoring the Orediggers second and third goals. Mines's first goal was scored by defensive player Nick Kubala (Houston, Texas/Taylor) just nine minutes into the first half. Westminsters lone goal was scored by Mike Johnson. The loss puts Mines at an overall record of 5-1 while they are 1-1 in conference play. The first half was a battle as CSM and UCCS fought back and forth but were unable to score. Going into half it was tied 0-0. Evan Neufeld gave UCCS a 1-0 lead scoring at the 48:30 mark. The win improves CSM's record to 5-0 and 1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference(RMAC). With two goals on the night, senior Mike Dixon got Mines out to a quick 2-0 lead. Dixon's second goal came at the end of the first half when he made a penalty shot. CSM took a 3-0 lead with Rafael Ribeiro's second half goal. Ribeiro currently leads the team with five goals on the season. CSU- Pueblo made a last minute effort scoring two goals in the second period. However, it was not enough to get past the undefeated Oredigger's. After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder Jeff Perkins (Houston, Texas/Army) opened the scoring at the 56:55 mark. Senior forward Rafael Ribeiro (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer), sophomore forward Craig Thompson (Littleton, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and junior midfielder Nick Clausnitzer (Puyallup, Wash./Rogers) also added goals for CSM. ENMU (0-1) opened the scoring 36 minutes into the game when Albert Robinson followed up a missed shot by Jonathan Holman. CSM junior goalkeeper Kevin Galloway (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) had made a diving save on Holman's initial shot. CSM (1-0) tied the game at 1-1 three minutes into the second half when senior forward Rafael Ribeiro (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Marty Politte (Golden, Colo./Lakewood). Sophomore forward Craig Thompson (Littleton, Colo./Highlands Ranch) netted what turned out to be the game-winner six minutes later on a penalty kick after Ribeiro was taken down from behind in the box. Ribeiro tallied his second goal of the game in the 73rd minute off a cross from sophomore forward Nao Lee (Thornton, Colo./Horizon) to conclude the scoring. Galloway posted three saves as the CSM defense held ENMU to just four total shots. Leif Craddock made six saves in a losing effort.
