HEAD MEN'S SOCCER COACH
FRANK KOHLENSTEIN
Frank Kohlenstein begins his tenth year on the sidelines
as the head coach of the Colorado School of Mines men's soccer program.
He is also in his third season as the head coach of the CSM women's
soccer program.
In his first nine seasons with the men's team, Kohlenstein
has compiled an overall record of 104-65-15 and captured three straight
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year Awards from 2000-02,
along with being named Co-Coach of the Year in 2006.
Last season, Kohlenstein led CSM to a 13-7-1 overall record
and a third-place finish in the RMAC (9-3). The Orediggers' season was
cut short as they fell to Metro State in the RMAC Semifinals (3-2 in
double overtime). CSM wound up with six All-RMAC selections and three
All-Midwest Region picks.
CSM earned its first-ever berth to the NCAA Division II
Tournament and defeated Incarnate Word in the opening round on penalty
kicks in 2005. However, the dream ended in the second round with a 1-0
setback to Fort Lewis, the eventual national champions.
In 2004, Kohlenstein led the Orediggers to a 10-4-5 overall mark and
a third-place showing in the RMAC with a 7-3-2 mark. CSM ended its season
with a 2-2 draw in the RMAC Tournament Semifinals, but lost the match
on penalty kicks.
Three years ago, Kohlenstein guided the Orediggers to their second straight
RMAC Regular Season Championship with a 9-3 conference mark and the
No. 1 seed in the RMAC Tournament. From 2000-02, he led the squad to
a combined 43-15-5 mark and his 2002 team finished the season with a
school-record 16 wins against four losses and one tie en route to a
No. 19 ranking in the nation and No. 3 ranking in the Midwest Region.
The team also won the RMAC Tournament Championship.
The successful run in 2002 came on the heels of a pair of outstanding
seasons in Golden. In 2000, Kohlenstein guided Mines to a 14-4-4 mark
and advanced to the RMAC Championship game. He then led the Orediggers
to a 13-7 record and a second-place regular season conference finish
in 2001.
Kohlenstein owns a 384-169-49 career record, as the 2007 season will
be his 28th at the collegiate and professional level.
He spent the 1997 season as the head coach of the Richmond Kickers and
the 1995 season at the helm of the Raleigh Flyers. Kohlenstein spent
10 years at the University of South Carolina - Spartanburg, where the
Rifles made three trips to the Final Four. Kohlenstein also served six
years at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte (NCAA Division
I), leading the team to its first-ever NCAA playoff berth. Kohlenstein
guided UNC - Charlotte to a total of three NCAA playoff appearances
during his time with the 49ers.
While taking five different teams on five different levels to the playoffs,
Kohlenstein has coached 26 All-Americans, 10 Academic All-Americans,
one Rhodes Scholar, five National Team players, and more than 131 All-Conference
athletes.
Kohlenstein received his B.S. in Physical Education from Florida State
in 1976, and his Masters in Exercise Physiology from Montana State in
1977.
Kohlenstein and wife, Debbie, reside in Golden with their dogs Aussie
