Volleyball and Football to play at home
as Colorado School of Mines celebrates Homecoming

GOLDEN, Colo. (Oct. 10, 2007) - The Oredigger volleyball and football teams will host home contests this weekend as Colorado School of Mines celebrates its 2007 Homecoming this Thursday, October 11th, through Saturday, October 13th.

The CSM volleyball team will host Western New Mexico University on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at Lockridge Arena. Thursday's contest will be Professor Appreciation Night for the Orediggers, as each player will have one of their favorite instructors accompany them to the match. The Colorado School of Mines Department of Athletics will also recognize Head Coach Shelly Johnson prior to Thursday's match against WNMU. Johnson was recently inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, Wayne State College.

On Saturday afternoon, the Oredigger football team will host Western New Mexico University at 12:00 p.m. at Brooks Field. Saturday's halftime period will be extended from 20 to 25 minutes to accommodate for CSM's Homecoming festivities. At the beginning of halftime, the Orediggers will retire the jersey (#48) of 1942 CSM graduate Harry Campbell. Campbell, who earned his degree in Petroleum Engineering, was a member of the Orediggers' undefeated 1939 football team. Campbell recently funded the development of a new football field - the Harry D. Campbell Field - with a major gift. This will be the first jersey number that has been retired in the history of Colorado School of Mines Athletics. Through six games, the CSM defense currently leads the nation (NCAA Division II) in sacks per game with 5.17 (31 total sacks).

The Oredigger volleyball team returns to action with a 7:00 p.m. home match against New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday night at Lockridge Arena.
