Orediggers retire Harry Campbell's football jersey

GOLDEN, Colo. - On Saturday afternoon, October 13th, 2007, Colorado School of Mines retired the jersey (#48) of 1942 graduate Harry Campbell during halftime of the Orediggers' home football game against Western New Mexico University at Brooks Field in Golden.

Over the past six decades, Campbell's generosity has helped the School to make great strides both in athletics and academics. Campbell has established endowments in support of the football program, several undergraduate scholarships and the Petroleum Engineering faculty. Campbell has also made major gifts to the Trefny Endowment for Curriculum Advancement, the Marquez Hall project and the Undefeated Champions of 1939 Scholarship Fund. Furthermore, Campbell recently funded the development of a new football field - the Harry D. Campbell Field - with a major gift.

"It is with great pleasure that we retire the jersey of Mr. Campbell," said Tom Spicer, Director of Athletics at CSM. "We are forever grateful to Mr. Campbell for his past, present and continued support of Colorado School of Mines."

One day prior to having his jersey retired, Campbell was inducted into the Platinum Level of the Mines Century Society in recognition of his outstanding generosity to the School. In 2004, Campbell was inducted into the Colorado School of Mines Athletics Hall of Fame as an outstanding supporter.

Campbell, who recently celebrated his 94th birthday, earned his degree in Petroleum Engineering from CSM in 1942 and was a member of the Orediggers' undefeated football team in 1939. Campbell's jersey was the first to be retired in the history of Colorado School of Mines Athletics. Following the conclusion of the 2007 season, no other football player will ever wear #48 at Colorado School of Mines.
