HEAD COACH
Dave Hughes will begin his seventh season as the head coach of the men's and women's swimming & diving teams at Colorado School of Mines in 2007-08. With Coach Hughes leading the program, five Mines' swimmers have been recognized as NCAA Division II All-Americans and two swimmers have earned Honorable Mention All-America honors. These seven athletes have combined to earn 10 All-America awards and 12 Honorable Mention All-America. Coach Hughes' teams also excel in the classroom, earning 12 College Swim Coaches Association Academic All-America Team awards. The women's team has been recognized eight straight semesters, and the men's team has earned the award four times. The men's team placed in the top 20 at the National Championships four straight seasons (2002- 2005) and the women's team placed at the National Championships in 2003 & 2004. In 2005, the CSM men's team finished 20th at nationals as Hughes coached his fifth All-American in four seasons as the head coach at CSM. In 2004, Hughes led the Oredigger men to a 19th place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships, while the women's team earned a 26th place showing. Hughes coached All-American Shane Copsey to 4th place in the 100 breast. For his efforts, Hughes was awarded with the American Swim Coaches Association Award of Excellence for the second time (2002 & 2004). In 2003, Hughes guided the Mines men to a 20th place showing at the National Championships, while the women placed 25th at nationals. Hughes coached men's All-American Shane Copsey to finals in the 100 and 200 breast and helped Gretta Simpson become the first female swimmer in Mines history to earn NCAA Division II All-America honors when she placed 7th in the 100 butterfly. In 2002, Hughes coached the Oredigger men to an 11th place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships as CSM produced two All-American performers. Brooks Masterson finished 5th in 200 butterfly and Brian Pursley became Mines' first NCAA Division II National Champion Swimmer by winning the men's 100 breast. While competing for the Ball State Cardinals in his hometown of Muncie, Indiana, Hughes was a five-time Mid-American Conference Champion in Relay events, as well as a MAC, school, and pool record holder. He still holds a 14-year-old school record at BSU as a member of the 200 Free Relay. Hughes was selected as Ball State's Outstanding Freshman and Honor Scholar Athlete in 1993 and he was voted a team captain his senior year. His athletic awards include 1997 and 2002 US Masters All-American honors and a 1998 USMS National Championship. In 2002, he was the top-ranked Masters Swimmer in the World by FINA for men aged 25-29 in the 50-meter butterfly. In 2005, he was the top finisher for men aged 30-34 in the 1.5 mile Alcatraz Sharkfest race in San Francisco Bay. Hughes has completed the swim from Alcatraz Island four times.
