CSM VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO KEARNEY, 3-0, IN NCAA TOURNAMENT KEARNEY, Neb. - The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, 3-0, to top-ranked Nebraska-Kearney at the Heath & Sports Center on Friday night. CSM concludes its season with a school-record 20 wins against 11 losses and its first berth in the NCAA Tournament in program history. On Friday night, the Orediggers were led by junior outside hitter Caitlin Mabe (Lakewood, Colo./Denver Lutheran) who posted eight kills, while sophomore setter Ashley Pagel (Brighton, Colo./Northern Colorado) dished out 23 assists. UNK (34-1), which will play Mesa State in the second round on Saturday, received 12 kills from Erin Gudmundson and 10 kills from Kelli Bangar. CSM, now 20-10 this season, must wait until Sunday night to see if it will be one of eight teams from the Southwest Region to earn a bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Metro State (21-7) will now play top-seeded Nebraska-Kearney in the RMAC Championship on Sunday. The Lopers advanced with a 3-0 win over Fort Lewis in Saturday's other semifinal. Game scores were 30-16, 30-23, 30-24. Sophomore middle hitter Nicole Leeper (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) posted 14 kills and hit .385 for CSM. Sophomore setter Ashley Pagel (Brighton, Colo./Northern Colorado) notched 41 assists, four digs and three kills, while senior outside hitter Samantha Bauer (Lakewood, Colo./Dubai UAE) tied Leeper for game-high honors with 14 kills. Senior libero Sarah Alsbrooks (Paola, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) amassed a match-best 22 digs. CSC (1-8, 0-1 RMAC) was led by Kristin Wilder who tallied six kills. Maura Bronte registered a team-best 11 digs. CSM will return to action next Friday when it hosts Fort Hays State at 7:00 pm in Volk Gym. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM VOLLEYBALL WINS AT REGIS, 3-1 DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team improved to 7-1 (1-0 RMAC) with a 3-1 victory at Regis in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams Tuesday night at Regis Fieldhouse. Game scores were 30-28, 32-34, 30-27, 30-18. CSM received a double-double effort of 35 assists and 10 kills from sophomore setter Ashley Pagel (Brighton, Colo./Northern Colorado). Senior right side Kelly Desens (Aurora, Colo./Overland) tallied 12 kills and six blocks, while senior libero Sarah Alsbrooks (Paola, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) registered a game-best 20 digs. Regis (1-8, 0-1 RMAC) was led by Tricia Leger who notched a match-best 17 kills. Laura Bisio totaled 10 kills and 12 digs, while Nia Ingram amassed 50 assists and 19 digs. The Orediggers will return to action on Friday night when they host Chadron State at 7:00 pm in Volk Gymnasium. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM VOLLEYBALL WINS TWO AT OWN TOURNAMENT GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team posted a 2-0 mark in the second and final day of the 2005 Days Inn Denver West/Oredigger Volleyball Classic with straight set wins over St. Edward's and Oklahoma Panhandle State. In the win over St. Edward's, senior outside hitter Samantha Bauer, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, (Lakewood, Colo./Dubai UAE) tallied 18 kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter Ashley Pagel (Brighton, Colo./Northern Colorado) added 41 assists and six digs, while sophomore outside hitter Kristin Evanyo (Littleton, Colo./Lakewood) tallied 10 kills. In the triumph over OPSU, Bauer recorded 19 kills, while Pagel dished out 46 assists. CSM (6-1) finished the two day tournament with a 3-1 mark with the only loss coming in its first match against 18th-raked Washburn, 3-2. The Orediggers will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Regis for a 7:00 pm RMAC match. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM VOLLEYBALL SPLITS TWO ON OPENING DAY OF TOURNEY GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the 2005 Days Inn Denver West/Oredigger Volleyball Classic in Volk Gymnasium. CSM lost its opening match to 18th-ranked Washburn, 3-2, before defeating Montana State-Billings, 3-1, in the nightcap. Senior libero Sarah Alsbrooks (Paola, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) was the story for CSM as she became the all-time leader in career digs in school history with 27 against Washburn and 22 more against MSU-Billings. She now has 1,348 career digs breaking the old mark of 1,327 digs by Jamie Henderson from 1994-97. Against Washburn (7-0), junior middle blocker Amanda Rebol (Fort Morgan, Colo./Fort Morgan) tallied 15 kills and eight blocks, while sophomore setter Ashley Pagel (Brighton, Colo./Northern Colorado) dished out 46 assists and added 12 digs. In the win over Billings (5-1), senior outside hitter Samantha Bauer (Lakewood, Colo./Dubai UAE) amassed 15 kills, while Pagel notched another double double with 49 assists and 10 digs. CSM (4-1) will return to action two times on Saturday to round out the tournament. At 1:00pm, CSM will host St. Edward's before rounding out the day with Oklahoma Panhandle State at 6:00 pm in Volk Gym. -- OREDIGGERS -- CSM VOLLEYBALL WINS THREE IN CALIFORNIA TURLOCK, Calif. - The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team opened the season with three straight wins in California. The Orediggers opened play on Thursday evening with a 3-1 win over Notre Dame de Namur and followed that with a 3-2 victory over Cal-State Stanislaus on Thursday night. On Saturday afternoon, CSM once again topped Cal-State Stanislaus, 3-1. Senior outside hitter Samantha Bauer (Lakewood, Colo./Dubai UAE) led the way for CSM as she totaled 44 kills, 26 digs and eight service aces, while hitting .319 on the weekend. Bauer had her best game in the opener with 18 kills and just three errors in 27 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage. In Saturday's win, she notched a double double with 16 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore setter Ashley Pagel (Brighton, Colo./Northern Colorado) dished out 113 assists, while senior libero Sarah Alsbrooks (Paola, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded 84 digs. She now needs 28 more digs to break the CSM career record of 1,327.
